In a very wet and muddy game OMBAC defeated Dallas this
past Saturday in RSL action, 36-25, at Glencoe Park in Dallas. The
match kicked off at 3:00 PM with Graham Bullen refereeing a game
slowed by the quagmire created from an earlier Division I match on
the wet muddy pitch.
Dallas kicked-off but was first to score after only 4 minutes of
play from an OMBAC turnover, which was not converted. Then OMBAC
went to work. A few minutes later OMBAC flyhalf, Matt Alexander,
kicked the ball into the Dallas end, OMBAC recovered possession and
halfback Ghian Snyman fed outside center Chris Frara a short pass,
which he touched down under the posts. Alexander converted. About 10
minutes later Alexander kicked a booming up and under, which the
Dallas fullback mishandled, and the OMBAC winger, David Burt,
recovered to take into the end zone untouched. Alexander converted.
After another 10 minutes of play, OMBAC's rookie lock, Lars Herman,
dove into the end zone from a 3-meter attacking line-out to touch
down for 5 more points. Alexander again converted, bringing the
score to 21-5 in favor of OMBAC after only 26 minutes of play. At
about 35 minutes a melee, antagonized by a Dallas player, broke out
in front of the Dallas bench. Referee Bullen yellow carded the
Dallas offender and red carded the OMBAC retaliator, Henry Schaaf.
Playing the last 5 minutes of the first half with only 14 men, OMBAC
allowed another Dallas try right on full time, which Dallas again
failed to convert, bringing the half-time score to 21-10 in favor of
OMBAC.
In the second half OMBAC's task was simple, play only 14 men like
15, and maintain their lead on a muddy pitch during a rain storm.
Once again Dallas came out after only a few minutes and scored first
but failed to convert, making it 21-15 for OMBAC. After 15 minutes
Alexander, doing a good job of keeping the ball in the Dallas end of
the field, was able to convert a penalty kick for 3 more OMBAC
points. Ten minutes later the ever persistent Dallas Harlequins came
back to score another try at 55 minutes but missed the conversion,
bringing the score to 24-20 in favor of OMBAC. Then the OMBAC
back-line worked their magic and delivered the ball to finish-man,
David Burt, for another try, which the consistent Alexander failed
to convert. Dallas once again attacked right back and scored yet
another try but again failed to make the conversion. That brought
the score to 29-25 in favor of OMBAC with only 9 minutes to play.
Dallas certainly had their attacking opportunities to take advantage
of OMBAC being down one man during the whole second half. However,
the 14-man OMBAC defense was unrelenting. And, it was winger David
Burt for OMBAC who put the final nail in Dallas's coffin as Burt
sprinted in for his third try right on full time, which Alexander
quickly converted, to end the match putting OMBAC on top, 36-25.
In a ten try game David Burt obviously made a huge difference
scoring a hat trick of trys for OMBAC and Alexander dictated play
while converting kicks for another 11 crucial points. However, it
was the constant quick reactions, accurate passes, and timely
kicking skills of OMBAC halfback, Ghian Snyman, that earned him man
of the match.
