OMBAC III 39 - Kern County 15
OMBAC III defeated the Kern County RFC on windswept Little Q playing field
to earn the right to represent Southern Califonia at the next stage of the
US National Division III Championships to be held in Omaha, Nebraska, 21-22
May 2005.
Although OMBAC had lost twice to KC during the regular season, OMBAC was
able to take first place in the League on points and because of some
administrative problems with another Div III team.
In a game in which OMBAC scored 5 tries and KC 3, it was KC that applied
initial pressure which resulted in the first try of the game at 22 minutes
by KC flanker Joe Hooper which KC failed to convert. Three minutes later
OMBAC flyhalf Willie Wong scored the first his two tries to tie the score at
5; fullback Jon Hinkin converted making the score 7-5 OMBAC.
Halftime score: OMBAC 7 - Kern County 5.
OMBAC scored within the first minute of the seconed half when hooker Phil
Jones touched down in the right corner, Hinkin missed the difficult
conversion. Six minutes later Wong scored his second try of the game off a
5m scrum which Hinkin converted bring the score to 19-5, OMBAC.
At 10 minutes of the second half OMBAC fullback Jon Hinkin, in an
exceptional display of skill, scored and converted a try for OMBAC after
fielding two of his own chip kicks. Three minutes later Hinkin slotted a
penalty goal bring the score to 29-5 OMBAC.
With 15 minutes left to go in the game KC flanker Joe Hooper scored his
second try of the game. KC's kicker failed to convert. Two minutes later
OMBAC's Phil Jones scored his second try of the afternoon which Hinkin
converted to bring the score to 36-10. Five minutes later Hinkin closed out
the day's scoring for OMBAC with a penalty kick, bringing the score to
39-10, OMBAC.
With four minutes remaining, KC first year wing Dave Munez was able to touch
down in the corner for an unconverted try.
