Paul Bretz refereed the quarter final match between OMBAC and
Old Blue of New York, in which Old Blue downed the visitors, 31-14.
On a pleasant day at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx Old Blue outscored
OMBAC 4 tries to 2. Old Blue started the match with high up and under kicks
but it was a try in the corner after 25 minutes of play that started the
scoring. Old Blue failed to convert the try but kicked a penalty goal 10
minutes later when OMBAC flanker, Ryan ReBell, was sin binned for attempting
to free the ball from a tackled player. That made the score 8-0 in favor of
Old Blue with less than 10 minutes in the half. Old Blue wasted no time in
taking advantage of OMBAC being down a man and kicked another penalty
conversion with 5 minutes to go. Then the Old Blue fullback finally split
the OMBAC defense and scored a try on full time but again failed to convert.
That made the half-time score 16-0 with ReBell still in the sin bin.
The second half opened with Old Blue attacking while OMBAC was still down
one man. It didn't take Old Blue long to score a muti-phase attack for 5
more points but again missed the conversion, making the score 21-0. After
ReBell returned to the pitch for OMBAC the Old Blue were soon able to
convert another penalty kick. Referee Bretz awarded penalties at the rate of
4-1 in favor of Old Blue throughout the match, which kept OMBAC from
developing much continuity. However, OMBAC fought back and winger, Mark
Crovelli, scored a nice 20 meter try on a cut back directly through the Old
Blue defense, which flyhalf Matt Alexander was able to convert for a 24-7
score line. Old Blue was able to score one more try off a great run by their
number eight, which they finally converted, bringing the score to 31-7.
OMBAC's number eight, Sciale Taulupe, scored the last try, which was
converted by Alexander, for a 31-14 final in favor of the Old Blue.
It was too little too late for OMBAC as they now contemplate rebuilding
their team for next season.
