OMBAC 27-Meraloma 19.
The Super League squad, in what has become a season starting tradition, faced off against Meraloma of Vancouver, Canada - a Super League Canada participant. The teams helped out copy writers around the rugby globe by battling to an identical score from last year's contest - with the not so minor change of OMBAC occupying the winner's slot. Newcomer Jeff Hullinger got off to a great start with OMBAC, playing in the D2 match earlier in the day and then scoring two tries in this match. Reports on if he pulled off a rare trifecta with a successful showing at the 'Comber that night were unavailable as this issue of the Legends Times went to press. This week has traditional rival Santa Monica traveling to the Little Q.  Santa Monica is one of two new teams playing up at the Super League level, with the other being the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

OMBAC D1 5 - Huntington Beach 34
Like D2, new faces and lack of cohesiveness proved to be too much to overcome against the Unicorns.  The game was a tale of two halves.  Some great movements were generated in attack for us but marred by the "one" bad pass which prevented a try.  Defense was erratic - making good tackles in open field play but missing easy ones out of the set piece.  HB converted four key mistakes into points and led at half 27-0.
Second half saw a much more inspired D1 squad.  Action went back and forth throughout much of the half.  Both teams looked like they were in mid-season form.  Great defense and spirited running were displayed by Jeremy Wright, Will Beck, and Troy Donoghue.   After 20 minutes, HB got on the board to bring the score to 34-0.  OMBAC quickly responded with some good handling to get first year player Korbin Konrady into the try zone. Final score was 34-5.   In the second side match, the results were very similar.  With many new players and new-to-rugby players on our squad, it took a while to come together. There were some fine individual efforts, including from center Chris Rozolowski. Chris was the man of the match and immediately improves his standing to be selected for the D1 topside. Final score was 24-0 in favor of HB.

OMBAC D2 0 - Old Aztecs 62
D-2 had their first match as a team against cross-town rival, San Diego Old Aztecs. The Aztecs were coming off a season that saw only a last second try keep them out of the semi-finals for the National Championship and, unfortunately for the OMBAC D2 side, it looked as though they have not slowed down. It came down to many of the OMBAC rookies playing in their first rugby match versus a National Championship contender and the Aztecs won comfortably 62-0. OMBAC did play better in the second half with a better defensive effort and some sustained phases and there were some individual bright spots, especially in newcomer Jeff Hullinger, but, overall, it was a day to learn. The Aztecs will be the best team we face until the playoffs and the learning experience will prove invaluable.
