RSL Recap (provided by Coach Bing Dawson)
OMBAC 36 - Santa Monica 10.
Santa Monica have entered the RSL and we will open the coming RSL season
with them at their field on March 17th, which they have turned into a big
event - their old boys day & their club day and banquet - they should be
highly motivated. But as to our match with them this past weekend, which
counts towards the D1 Ganey Cup, we expected a very physical match. We were
going to be low on numbers of RSL players because of the USA National 7s
camp being held at the Olympic Training facility in Chula Vista - there are
4 of our players that are in the 22 man squad. We got right on the board
with a try by newcomer Anthony Chaffee (OPSB-#8). SM came back with a
penalty, which we followed with a converted try by wing Ryan Claros to make
it 12-3. SM scored a nice pressure converted try to bring the score close,
22-10, but with a penalty and another converted try by another newcomer from
Minnesota, 20-year-old Joey Brown, [editor's note - Yes! Skol Vikings!]. The
second half was a lot of SM slow pressure with their forwards and lighting
quick strikes by our backs culminating in tries by former BYU and current
Eagle standout, Jeff Hullinger, and OMBAC's top try-scorer, Jason Raven.
With just 6 training sessions under our belts and going heavy on Kent
Weyand's workouts we had to be happy. We did have a player sin-binned and
that lack of discipline will not work for us and will end in a critical
defeat. There are still a few more recruits arriving, and we will continue
to be a bit of a broken team until the 7s players return from Wellington,
NZ, and the Petco Park USA 7s.
D1 Recap (Provided by Coach Clark Bernales)
OMBAC 36 - Santa Monica 6
It was another day of two halves that ended much better for the D1 this past
wknd vs SMD1. With the SM top flite players in the RSL match, it gave our
squad a match to regroup from the error-prone loss against HB Unicorns.
Still trying to adjust to each other, we fell behind early to two SM
penalties 0-6. In the closing moments of the first half Chike Outlaw closed
a beautiful 3/4 field, four ruck sequence that saw OMBAC go 7-6 at half.
With the wind, we played the field position game smartly and had many
lineouts in the attacking end. Our rucking pattern started to work more
efficiently and yielded many overlap situations. Korbin Konrady was able to
dot down twice as a result. Ryan Gallop capped off another sequence as did
Ryan Mouritzen. Andrew Gray was sublime on the day with his tackling,
counter attack from fullback, converting 4-5 kicks after tries, and one
penalty kick.
Final score - 36-6.
Special recognition to centers Ryan Mouritzen and Craig Umemura for stingy
defense and hard-nosed running always getting beyond the gainline. New prop
Aaron Denaro threw a fire lit spear in the middle of our pitch by his
aggressive play in defense, strong scrummaging, and support work. Richie
Jeffries contributed well in the loose taking up balls no one else wanted
and fielding many high balls that were not caught the week prior...
D2 Recap (Provided by Coach Bryan Watts)
OMBAC D2 7 - Riverside 48
Lost another tough one to Riverside (who was D1 last year) 7 to 48. This
group is still getting used to playing with each other. After a rough start
to the season last week this past weekend showed some improvement and they
are headed in the right direction. The boys showed a lot of heart and
determination after being in Riverside's end for about 10 minutes, finally
crossing the line and scoring right on full time and then converting. This
weekend we play SLO, which I do not know much about.
